French Apple Pie
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell
- 6 cups sliced tart apples
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Topping
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup butter
- ¾ cup all purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Combine apples, granulated sugar and spices. Arrange in pie shell. If apples lack tartness, sprinkle with one tablespoon lemon juice. Combine flour, brown sugar and salt, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over apples. Bake in hot oven – 425 for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 and bake about 25 minutes longer or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown.
Best served with Vanilla Bean ice cream.
I use this same recipe for Apple Crisp – but leave off the pastry and put apples in a buttered bowl.
